The San Juan mountains are a volcanic range. It is a completely different type of mountain system when compared to the neighboring ranges. Although all volcanic activity ceased a long time ago, the area still has numerour hot springs. Along Hwy 550, this mineral seep can be seen off the side of the road. Overvcast days bring out the color of the minerals.
