Columbine is the state flower in Colorado and there is little doubt why. They actually look like two flowers in one as the inner white petals are offset by beautiful blue outer petals. These are the native Rocky Mountain Blue variety.
They grow in full Sun but are often seen coming from shady spots behind rocks, under fallen timber and in sunny meadows. They are mostly a sub alpine flower and their delicate appearance is in direct contrast to their rugged character.
