I was in the park to shoot pictures of elk rutting. I could hear them all over the lower valleys. In a few minutes I would leave to find a herd and try to get images of antler to antler combat.

Before I would do that, I wanted to catch Longs Peak and the Diamond at first light. The eastern face is a rock climbers dream. It is a sheer cliff and no place to make mistakes. Climbers call it the Diamond.

When the first light hit the peak it exploded in red. For a few minutes the color was intense and clear. It would not last very long and it slowly gave way to more normal yellowish light. But for a few minutes it was unbelievable.

One of the most photographed places in the state, the history of Colorado is reflected in this old mill.
